Best Campgrounds

  • Platte River: The most popular campground is Platte River, which tends to be fully occupied every night from June to September. There are tent sites, walk in sites, and group in sites available at this campground. Reservations tend to fill up months in advance.

  • D.H. Day: This site operates on a first come, first served basis. If your friends or family prefer a rugged camping experience, this may be the site for you. This site also holds easy access to Lake Michigan. The campground is open from April to the end of November, and visitors can find nightly programs that are hosted by the ranger during the summer season.

Activities in Sleeping Dunes

  • Dune Climb: Climb this 110 foot dune, and you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view of Leelanau County, and various lakes. Avid hikers are recommended to hike to Lake Michigan through the Dune Climb Hiking Trail. In the winter times, this is used as a sledding hill.
  • Kayak, Canoe, Float: Two very peaceful rivers flow at the center of Sleeping Bear Dunes. This includes the Platte River, which is perfect for lounging tubers, those who wish to canoe, or just simply lounge on the beach. There is also the Crystal River, which is perfect for kayaking.
  • Swimming + Beachcombing: Explore the endless landscape of Lake Michigan beaches! Frequent visitors of Sleeping Bear recommend traveling to Esch Road Beach and Good Harbor. Peterson Beach is are another great option, if your group is looking for a less crowded beach.
  • Pyramid Point: One of the hidden treasures of Sleeping Dunes, it is a little difficult to find, but the view is absolutely breathtaking.
