Cuyahoga Valley National Park follows the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron in northeast Ohio. It mixes forests, waterfalls, sandstone ledges and wetlands with farms, historic villages and the route of the old Ohio and Erie Canal, now the Towpath Trail.

Because it sits between two cities, the park is easy to visit in a day and open to activity in every season. Fall color is the high point, spring brings waterfalls and wildflowers, and winter offers sledding and cross-country skiing when snow allows.

Season by season

Spring

Spring brings strong waterfalls, wildflowers on the ravine slopes and migrating birds along the river and at Beaver Marsh. Trails can be muddy and slick after rain.

Spring is a good time to see Brandywine Falls at full flow before summer crowds arrive.

Summer

Summer is green and busy, especially on weekends at Brandywine Falls and the Ledges. The Towpath Trail is popular for biking, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs a regular schedule; check its website for times and how to bring a bike aboard.

Humid afternoons often bring thunderstorms. Waterfalls can shrink to a trickle in dry spells.

Fall

Fall is peak season. Color usually peaks in mid-October, and the Ledges Overlook, Towpath Trail and scenic railroad are especially popular. Weekend parking fills early at Brandywine Falls and the Ledges.

Go early in the day or on weekdays for a quieter visit.

Winter

Winter is quiet. When there is enough snow, the park is popular for sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and frozen waterfalls can be beautiful.

Boardwalks, stairs and ledges get icy, so wear traction devices. Some facilities reduce hours in winter.

Camping at Cuyahoga Valley

The park has no large campground. A small number of primitive walk-in campsites near the Stanford House are available by reservation in season; check nps.gov/cuva for how to book.

For more camping options, look to nearby Ohio state parks such as West Branch, and to private campgrounds around the valley. Hotels and inns are plentiful in the surrounding cities and towns.
